As usual, there will be a model and photo contest at the Symposium. The contest room is across the hall from the exhibitors area, and will be open for entries and voting during the same hours as the exhibitors area. Bags and boxes must be checked at the door. The contest room will be locked during the afternoons and after 10:00 at night. When open, there will be attendants present. Categories will be steam locomotive, other motive power, freight car, passenger car, cabooses, maintenance of way, structure, diorama, complete train, and model in progress. Photo categories will be color prototype, color model, black and white prototype, black and white model, and best computer generated or enhanced photo. There will be a best of show in both model and photo categories. Voting will be closed at 10:00am on Thursday morning, and contest entries may be picked up from 10:30 until noon Thursday. Trophies will be awarded Thursday evening.
This will be a popular vote, and all paid attendees will be eligible to vote. We do not insist that all work be done by the entrant, but if the work is done by more than just the entrant credit should be given to those involved. Models may be presented on a display track, but please no mini dioramas.
The Contest Room will be staffed during viewing hours and locked down during non-viewing hours.
Models/Photos may be entered at any time the Contest Room is open, however, it is encouraged that they are registered as soon as possible to permit the maximum amount of time for attendees to view and vote on the entered contest items.
Viewers arriving with bags/packages will be asked to store them in a holding area adjacent to the entrance to the contest area.
Touching or handling of entries will only be allowed by owners, or by Contest Room officials or attendants.
Photos of entries may be taken whenever the Contest room is open for viewing and voting. No tripods or table‐based mounts will be permitted. Monopods are allowed. Please be courteous to others when taking photographs!
Entrants must remove all packing materials and containers from the contest area immediately after placing an entry. If for some reason you need storage for the packing material and containers, contact the contest chairperson.
Entry forms are available for print-out at the bottom of this page.
Entrants are requested to have entry forms filled out before arrival to facilitate prompt registration and placement for viewing.
The Entry Form will be displayed with the entry in the Contest Room. Entrants are encouraged to describe in as much detail as possible the construction and background of the entry, in the “Description of Model” section of the form. Additional/ separate informational pages will not be displayed with entries.
A model built and finished entirely by the entrant is certainly a plus, and should be so stated in the information displayed with the model. If the entrant had assistance with construction and/or finishing the model, it would also be appropriate to give credit to the helper(s) where it is due.
If a model is declared as an assistance effort, all assistances and what they did, should be listed on the entry form.
All models shall be constructed in S scale (1:64).
Locomotive and rolling stock models (freight, passenger, caboose, Non-Revenue & train) should represent a narrow gauge prototype.
A model that has won First Prize in a previous Sn3 Symposium or National Narrow Gauge Convention contest may not be entered.
"Display only" entries are welcome, in any scale, but entries so labeled will not be included in the popular vote. For example, these may be prior contest entrants/winners, presented for our enjoyment or feedback.
